Milk...Is...EVERYWHERE!!!
When people ask me what has been the hardest part about being vegan, I give the same answer. Cheese was more addicting than I thought...and milk is in things you wouldn’t believe!
I had never been one to read the label on food packaging. At most, I would look to see how much sugar, salt and calories were there. I was never very aware of the ingredients that I was consuming. That was, until I became vegan.
Now, before I bestow upon you my rant, in the form of spoken word, I must make a disclaimer that there WILL BE PROFANITY...so...there's that.
Here’s my new mini-segment called:
*There’s Milk in That Shit*
Every salad dressing I liked,
there’s milk in that shit.
Every chocolate thing I was into,
there was milk in that shit.
Some spaghetti sauces and crackers,
Milk.. In.. That.. Shit!
McDonald’s fries,
there’s milk (and a bunch of other ingredients we don't want to go into) in that shit.
Then the kicker...
Some meat and cheese replacement products that you think are vegan because it is obviously catering to people that don’t want regular animal products...nope, read the label CAREFULLY...because there’s milk in that shit too!
Good luck out there fellow New Vegans.
My reason for writing this isn’t just to vent, but also to give any new vegans a heads up. The first time you get a new product, take the extra 30 seconds to read through Every. Single. Ingredient. It will save your wallet, your conscience and your tummy. I always think in the back of my mind, if it’s white, liquid, or baked...double check the ingredients.
I also found it really helpful to look up food ingredients on restaurant websites before I go out with friends and family. Some places like Ruby Tuesday and Salad Works will filter their items based off the diet preferences you enter. Peta is also a really reliable source when looking for places with vegan options.
You’ll find that you will start cooking more than ever, just so you don’t have to double and triple check all the ingredients in items you buy. In the end, that’s a great thing...you become more accountable for the food you eat, not only ethically, but for your overall health too. BUT, for the times when you are tired and just want something in your belly ASAP, just double check the ingredients...because there might be milk in that shit.
